Freeze Dried Breast Milk FAQ's

What is freeze-dried breast milk?

Freeze-dried breast milk is your own expressed breast milk with the water gently removed through a process called freeze-drying. This turns the frozen milk into a lightweight powder that takes up less space and can be stored at room temperature. It can then be reconstituted with the correct amount of water when you're ready to use it.

Is freeze dried breast milk safe?

This isn’t a simple yes-or-no question. The safety and quality of freeze-dried breast milk depend on the entire journey — from expressing and freezing to processing, packaging, storage and reconstitution.

At The Milk Mums, we’re dedicated to maintaining the highest possible standards at every stage within our control. We’ll also provide clear guidance to help you express, freeze, store and reconstitute your milk in the best possible way at home.

Careful handling at every stage helps us achieve the safest, highest-quality product possible for your family.

Does freeze-drying breast milk destroy the nutrients?

No, freeze-drying is designed to preserve the maximum nutritional value of breast milk. Research suggests many important nutrients and properties are well retained, and freeze-drying may offer advantages for preserving certain components during longer-term storage compared with conventional freezing.

How long does freeze-dried breast milk last?

Freeze-dried breast milk can have a much longer shelf life than frozen breast milk when processed, packaged and stored correctly. At The Milk Mums, we’ll provide a clear use-by date and storage instructions based on our validated process, so you know exactly how to store and use your milk safely.

Is freeze-dried breast milk the same as formula?

No. Freeze-dried breast milk is your own expressed breast milk with the water removed, whereas infant formula is manufactured from a specific combination of ingredients. When correctly reconstituted, freeze-dried breast milk contains nothing but your own breast milk.

Do you add anything to my breast milk?

No. We don’t add anything to your breast milk. Freeze-drying simply removes the water from your milk — no preservatives, additives or other ingredients are added during the process.
